Eating and drinking in Frontone
There is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to dining out, with more than twenty fantastic restaurants within a 15-minute drive of the house and a number of independent gorgeous wineries. The traditional method of cooking in Le Marche is over the embers of a wooden fire, and all the restaurants use this method to cook meat.
In the Castello at Frontone there are two restaurants. One is built into the rock and is a little more expensive, but even so you could get a two course meal for two and a carafe of local wine for around €30. The other restaurant is a traditional trattoria which is a lot cheaper. Also at the Castello there is an ice cream parlour where the ice cream is made on the premises. Our Italian friends tell us that it is the best ice cream in Italy but they might be biased. After many tastings we and most of our visitors agree.
Between the Castello and the house there are another two trattorias and three pizzerias, all of which are reasonably priced and the food is very good. Pizzas start around €5, and at the trattorias you will typically pay around €20 for two, including wine. There is also a hotel that has a restaurant where the food is excellent. The house starters are a meal in themselves, and in honesty we have never worked out their prices as every meal we have ever had comes to €25 plus wine!
Just ten minutes drive away there are two rural restaurants with stunning views. One has a speciality of buffalo meat, and the other one produces different pasta dishes every week. The prices vary depending on what you have, however the people who run them are very friendly and do speak some English.
Frontone also boasts three bars, our favourite of which is on the square, with a nice area to sit outside. There is also a bar in the Castello, which is a very pleasant place to sit and enjoy a glass of the local Verdicchio.
